Tartuffe - (Easter 1997)

Production designed for the mainhouse of the National Theatre of Cyprus in Nicosia and tour of the island (Larnaka, Paphos and Limassol)

Scenic workshop 1
Scenic workshop 2
The main set in the middle of construction. Because of the planned tour and the limited transport available (an open truck!) the set had to break down into several pieces which presented something of a headache especially as far as the stability of the main staircase went.

Three photos taken just before Christmas 1996 on my first exploratory visit having just completed the model of the set design. The extreme left view is of one side of the main workshop. Reading left to right there follow the two adjacent areas of a painting room and an area dedicated to fixed machinery: bedsaw, planer etc.

floorcloth painting

The painting area in the main workshop was too small to accommodate the full size floor cloth and an unused exhibition space was found to do the job. It seemed to be a rarity in Cyprus to paint a floor cloth and, despite my warnings of the inevitable consequences, a lightweight canvas was used which stretched and tore in several places because of the wear and tear from the scenic trucks' movement during the run.

Costume workshop

The costume workroom. There were good sized adjacent fitting, sewing and dye rooms but this small room was the nerve centre of Suzanna's operation. The staff were very friendly, efficient and extremely committed to their work; the workroom became a natural retreat for me as a home cooked picnic lunch was always offered if I timed my visits well. It was all very civilised!
